Bruce Springsteen Sings "I'll See You In My Dreams" At 9/11 Commemoration Ceremony - Gothamist

The names of the 2,977 people killed on September 11, 2001 were read by family members during the annual 9/11 Commemoration Ceremony in Lower Manhattan on Saturday, the 20th anniversary of the attacks in New York City, Washington D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden were in attendance, along with Barack and Michelle Obama, and Bill and Hillary Clinton. Mayor Bill de Blasio, New York Governor Kathy Hochul, former mayor Rudy Giuliani, Senate Majority Chuck Schumer, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and many more were also present, though no politicians made speeches, because the ceremony is meant for the families.

In addition to the reading of names, which include the six victims from the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, there were six moments of silence, one for when each of the Twin Towers was struck by a plane, one for when each of the towers fell, one for when a plane hit the Pentagon, and one for when Flight 93 crashed in Shanksville.

Bruce Springteen, whose 2002 album The Rising was a response to the September 11 attacks, performed "I'll See You In My Dreams":

And Broadway actor Kelli O'Hara sang "You'll Never Walk Alone":

Vice President Kamala Harris gave a speech in Shanksville this morning, where Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff, former president George Bush and former first lady Laura Bush were also in attendance. Bush also spoke at the ceremony, recalling: "On America’s day of trial and grief, I saw millions of people instinctively grab for a neighbor’s hand and rally to the cause of one another."

Mike Low, whose daughter was a flight attendant on Flight 11, the first plane to hit the World Trade Center, offered a similar sentiment at the Manhattan ceremony, saying, "As we carry these 20 years forward, I find sustenance in a continuing appreciation for all of those who rose to be more than ordinary people."

And Thea Trinidad, who was 10 when her father died in the World Trade Center, told those gathered, “It’s hard because you hoped that this would just be a different time and a different world. But sometimes history starts to repeat itself and not in the best of ways."
