Prince Charles makes emotional first statement on death of Prince Philip - New York Post

A grief-shaken Prince Charles made his first statement Saturday on the loss of “my dear Papa.”

“I particularly wanted to say, that my father spent the last 70 years giving the most remarkable, devoted service to the queen, to my family and the country, and also to home,” Charles said, speaking for the family as the eldest son and heir to the throne a day after Prince Philip’s death at age 99.

“And as you can imagine, my family and I miss my father enormously,” Charles added, addressing reporters who had camped out in front of his home in Gloucestershire.

“He was a much loved and appreciated figure,” the extemporaneous statement continued, speaking shortly after Buckingham Palace announced that Philip’s funeral will be held next Saturday, and be preceded by a national moment of silence.

Prince Harry will fly to the UK to attend the ceremony without his wife, Meghan Markle, who is expecting a baby girl early in the summer.

“And apart from anything else, I can imagine, we are so deeply touched by the number of other people here and elsewhere around the world and the commonwealth who share our loss and our sorrow,” he said.

“My dear Papa was a very special person who I think above all else would have been amazed by the reaction and the touching things that have been said about him,” Charles said.

“And from that point of view we are, my family, deeply grateful for all that. It will sustain us in this particular loss and at this particularly sad time.”

In speaking for the royal family, Charles has spared his mum, Queen Elizabeth, doing so.

The queen is said to be bearing up well — even “doing amazing” — considering the loss of her husband of 74 years, her daughter-in-law Sophie, Countess of Wessex, said Saturday.
